Hanging With The Natives

Tuesday, July 26th, 2011
[caption id="attachment_1375" align="alignnone" width="333" caption="Greyson and Christian Fletcher at Julian Schnabel's House."][/caption] I spent much of July in New York, and depending on who you've been talking to, I was there for a variety of reasons. The heat was, often times, agonizing and unbearable. But despite the exhaustion from that, I really enjoyed my time on the East Coast; from Montauk to Manhattan, I was hanging with the natives. First came Tripoli Gallery's presentation of "Flip Flops and Popsicles", where my artwork was featured. I had several pieces displayed there and it was a really good opportunity for me to expand my works in front of a broader audience. (http://www.tripoligallery.com/) Then came the Hamptons International Film Festival where my surf movies, "Savage Beast" and "Supernatural" were featured. Long-time family friend and ...

Grommetland

[caption id="attachment_1287" align="alignnone" width="500" caption="Wanna go for a ride? John John and Ivan cruising the North Shore."][/caption] There are moments hard to forget. Being with your friends, pushing one another, just going for it. And at my age, I'm still doing it; whether it's surfing with the little guys like my grandson Greyson, or going out with the pros, or the older guys cruising on their longboards, or just filming all the beach girls on their shortboards at San Onofre... I'm still doing it and loving all these moments. And often times, I'm lucky enough to capture these moments on film. My collaboration with so many surfers, so many of these characters, have led me to believe that things ...

John John Florence: The Surfer As A Grom As A Man

Thursday, January 13th, 2011
[caption id="attachment_1222" align="alignnone" width="375" caption="(Photo: The surfer as a grom; John John Florence checking out the surf at Backdoor.) "][/caption] To say that I've had an association with John John since he was a wee bitty grom would be a gross understatement. Not only have we established a bond as surfers, but our friendship has always been tight and crossed-over into a kinship only known between my family, the Fletchers, and John John with his little brothers Nathan and Ivan, and mom Alex; Mom John. I wanted to share some of the photos I've taken of John John throughout the years. This here is just a miniscule piece of my much larger archive. Like my boards, paintings, and sculptures, photography is another artistic endeavor that I've involved my life with. [caption ...

Herbie Fletcher’s “Wrecktangle”

Monday, December 6th, 2010
[caption id="attachment_1205" align="alignnone" width="500" caption="Herbie Fletcher's "Wrecktangle" at the Waikiki Edition Hotel "][/caption] Herbie will be in Oahu this week to promote his "Wrecktangle" board sculpture that's being featured in the lobby of The Waikiki Edition. Coming from the mastermind of Ian Schrager, The Waikiki Edition is a new type of hotel - kind of like an entity of its own - that's being introduced by the Marriott International. In collaboration with interior designers George Yabu and Glenn Pushelberg and landscape designer Deborah Nevins, the Waikiki Edition resides as its own sanctuary on the sand; smack dab near the beaches and Marina shopping districts in a coastal urban sprawl. Truly, a visiting surfer's paradise. When you walk into the lobby, the first thing that captures your eye is the wall-to-wall "Wrecktangle" pieced ...
